To the Editor: The review on the importance of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in infectious diseases by Singh et al. (Emerg Infect Dis 1997;3:41-9) failed to mention the potential role of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DM in conferring susceptibility to infectious diseases. HLA-DM is an MHC class II-like molecule essential for normal antigen processing and presentation (1). HLA-DM has been shown to function as a peptide editor, in that it influences the repertoire of peptides bound to HLA-DR. Paratyphoid Fever Due to Salmonella enterica Serotype Paratyphi A

Typing of Ovar-DRB1 second exon with PCR-RFLP technique in Iranian Shaul Sheep
Several studies have focused on polymorphisms of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in sheep, Ovar-MHC. This molecule plays a pivotal role in antigen presentation for eliciting immune responses against invading pathogens. The best-characterized genetic control of disease resistance and immune response in animals is associated with MHC. Numerous molecular genetic investigations have been und...

متن کاملMHC IIB Genetic Diversity and its Association With Humoral Immune Responses in Commercial Turkey
Background: Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is one of the best characterized genetic regions controlling immune responses against vaccines. Identifying the association between MHC haplotypes and improved immune responses would be useful in genetic breeding strategies in animals. OBJECTIVES: MHC class II B genetic diversity and its association with humoral immune responses against Newcast...
متن کاملMHC heterozygosity confers a selective advantage against multiple-strain infections.
Genetic heterozygosity is thought to enhance resistance of hosts to infectious diseases, but few tests of this idea exist. In particular, heterozygosity at the MHC, the highly polymorphic loci that control immunological recognition of pathogens, is suspected to confer a selective advantage by enhancing resistance to infectious diseases (the "heterozygote advantage" hypothesis). To test this hyp...
متن کاملChlamydia pneumoniae induces interleukin-10 production that down-regulates major histocompatibility complex class I expression.
Recently, it was demonstrated that CD8(+) T cells are important for the response against Chlamydia pneumoniae. By use of the human monocytic cell line U937 and human monocytes taken from peripheral blood, we investigated the effect of infection on various molecules critical for CD8(+) T cell function. A strong secretion of interleukin (IL)-10 by infected cells was observed, together with an inh...
